The Digital Trace

The Digital Trace

الأثر الرقمي

A film about what remains. When a person moves—across borders, across platforms, across the versions of themselves they inhabit at different points in life—they leave traces. This film follows those traces: not as data, but as evidence of a particular kind of human presence that is hard to name and harder to hold.

Director's Note

The question I keep returning to: when a person disappears from a place — physically or otherwise — what is it that actually disappears? Not the memory others have of them. Not their data. Something harder to name. This film is an attempt to find a form for that.

  • What is the difference between a digital trace and a memory?
  • Who inherits the digital presence of a person after they are gone?

Process

Pre-production. Writing and visual research ongoing.

A continuation of questions raised in New Present — pushing further into what digital life does to the experience of presence and absence.
